Adventure awaits you on Kodiak Island. It is without a doubt one of the most hidden beautiful places on earth. Nestled in the far northern Pacific Ocean. The scenery is breath taking, with mountains rising up out of the ocean. It’s hard to understand just how big Alaska is, Kodiak Island is no different. Kodiak is part of Alaska but, it could be its own state. Separated from the main land by 20 miles of violent ocean called the Shelikof Strait, it stands like an island fortress, at a hundred miles long and forty miles wide in places.

Thanks to the cycle of life combined with high levels of rain fall, Kodiak earned its nick name the Emerald Island. This is true, especially in the summer. During summer months the Island turns bright green.  Each year the salmon come back providing nutrients to the land and the animals that call it home. Dying up stream their nutrients go to the ground, making for a thick foliage, much of which is delicious salmon berries. Salmon berries are similar to raspberries by the end of July the Kodiak hill side is covered with them. Salmon berries combined with the salmon themselves are the reason our brown bears grow as large as they do. The bears simply have more food than other brown bears, and a milder winter. During the summer, bears can often be observed seeking out those food reserves. Bald eagles are also present for the salmon’s bounty all summer and fall. Often times fox can be observed sneaking away with a piece of fish. Exploring the island many other animals can also be seen.   There are a wide variety of birds coming from land and sea; sea mammals, river otter, beaver, mountain goat, and Sitka blacktail deer. If you’re into viewing wildlife Kodiak never gets boring, especially when you hire a good guide to take you to some of the best spots.

Whether that be hiking, beach combing, photography, sightseeing, finding a good place to relax.  Whatever a day of adventure looks like to you, this outfit will make it happen. UTV River Fishing guided

Fishing Trips- $450 per person, up to 6 persons

-Single occupancy guided rate, please contact outfitter for pricing

July brings in new life to Kodiak Island with the arrival of salmon. High Caliber combines a day of off roading with an action-packed day of river fishing. Fresh chrome sockeye salmon head up stream on a mission. Pound for pound, I think they are the hardest fighting salmon. Catching them on a fly rod makes it even more exciting! When hooked, sockeye (red salmon) explode into a frenzy often times in tight sections of the river, making for a unique fish fight you’ll be sure to remember. All the while keeping one eye on the brush watching for a big Kodiak brown bear.

These fish are fresh from the sea, often times they still have sea lice. The red salmon is great table fair. As the name suggest this salmon has a bright red fillet and it is good eating or for smoking. Usually, the limit is 5 salmon per person per day. So, a good day of fishing yields a full cooler/freezer. The guide service comes prepared with a cooler and plenty of ice. Average weight on fish run between 4 to 8 pounds per fish. After our day of fishing the fish can be dropped off at a processor in town where it can be prepared for shipping.

Sockeye salmon continue to enter the river well into August. In late July they are also joined by pink salmon otherwise known as humpy’s. Pink’s are also a hand full on a rod. Table fair wise, if a pink is caught soon after entering freshwater it is good stuff. Dolly Vardon trout are also present in the river often times in such great number’s salmon can be hard to get to.

These trips can be tailored to each fisherman’s needs.  Physically if a person is hindered, we can use the machines to access relatively easy fishing spots. If a person is physically fit, we can cover ground! This can be a great advantage for finding the fish. If need be, the entire creek can be searched. If you own a pair, be sure to bring some good walking waders and sunglasses. Fishing day trips last ten hours from the time we leave the parking lot. Don’t forget the camera!

On day trips, if needed, the guide service can provide fishing poles; tackle, cooler, ice, waders, optics, rain gear. The outfit will also bring water and some snacks.  If a big lunch is desired it is recommended clients pack that with them. Usually, things are so exciting its hard-to-find time to sit down and eat.

UTV’s can be utilized to set up a comfortable camp near great fishing. If preferred Campbell’s can spike out! Spiking out is carrying a small camp in backpacks and hiking into the backcountry for the desired number of days. Kodiak is largely high mountain alpine area’s that are breathtakingly beautiful. This makes for excellent hiking, a person could just loose themselves in for days. The focus of these trips could be photographing wildlife. In late May the brown bear are mating and the last of the snow is melting, this would be an excellent time for a backpack style wildlife photography trip.
On these trips once we leave town you are taken care of. We provide necessary equipment for camping, food and any other activities.

High Caliber also has access to hunt this area for bear, mountain goat and Sitka blacktail deer. This provides for excellent year-round scouting! Fishing and hunting trips can be combined. Deer season opens August first with bucks still in velvet and sockeye still coming in the river there is no better time to fill your freezer. Often times if the desired number of reds have made it up stream the limit is raised to 10 sockeye per person per day. During Mountain goat season, Coho (silver) salmon are interring the river also good table fair but limit is one per day. Also, catch and release fall steelhead are coming in the river, an excellent trophy fishery. All though the smell of dead fish is in the air, the river still has plenty of fish in it as brown bear season rolls around. All of these hunts would make for great fun combined with a fishing trip.
